12th March 2020

Ministers Shane Ross and Brendan Griffin have recognised the extent of the crisis facing the weddings, hospitality and leisure industry in respect of the challenge that COVID-19 has presented. The agreement the ministers have requested from the Government for urgent assistance for businesses includes a request for significant reductions to VAT, water charges, local rates and other outgoings such as employers PRSI.

The Ministers have also called for payment holidays for businesses in relation to revenue, taxation collection and banking business loans. The IWIF, which is the only body that represents the interests of almost 4000 wedding industry businesses and 38,000 industry professionals has called on the Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohue, to support the IWIF Industry Protection Strategy and to fund implementation and administration of same.

The Ministers’ press-release is available HERE.

The Irish wedding industry generates over €2.5 billion annually and supports in excess of 46,000 jobs and is the top key domestic contributor to the hotel and leisure sector. A concerted and immediate effort must be implemented and financially supported in order to protect the wedding industry. This must be delivered proactively rather than reactively if any effect is going to be achieved. The IWIF have directly applied for government investment in our organisation so as to fund and communicate a concerted crisis strategy to the industry.
